What is a sound level meter?

A sound level meter is a handheld instrument that measures sound pressure level in decibels (dB), using a calibrated microphone to convert air-pressure fluctuations into an electrical signal that is filtered, weighted and displayed as a reading. Extech's range, supplied by Ecotao, covers everything from quick single-range spot-checks to Type 2 dual-range survey meters and a real-time octave band analyzer, for occupational, environmental, industrial and product-testing noise measurement.

Two pieces of South African legislation make having the right meter important: the Noise Exposure Regulations under the OHS Act (Act 85 of 1993), which set an 85dBA noise-rating limit for an 8-hour working day; and SANS 10103:2008, which governs the measurement and rating of environmental noise. A Type 2 meter with A-weighting and Data Hold satisfies both frameworks for most routine compliance surveys.

Type 1 meters are precision-grade instruments used for legal, forensic or laboratory acoustic work. Type 2 meters, with roughly ±1.5 to 2dB accuracy, are the general-purpose standard used for occupational noise surveys, environmental checks and most industrial applications. Every Extech model on this page meets ANSI/IEC Type 2 as a minimum — the 407732, 407750 and 407790A all carry that certification.
South Africa's Noise Exposure Regulations under the OHS Act (Act 85 of 1993) set an 85dBA noise-rating limit as an 8-hour time-weighted average, with peak noise not to exceed 137dBA. A Type 2 meter measuring at least 35 to 130dB with A-weighting, such as the 407732, covers this range with room to spare.
Yes. SANS 10103:2008 governs the measurement and rating of environmental noise in South Africa, with typical daytime and night-time limits as low as 45dBA and 35dBA in rural and residential districts. A meter with A-weighting, Fast/Slow response and a low-end range down to 20dB, such as the 407790A, is suited to these lower environmental readings.
A-weighting (dBA) filters the reading to approximate how the human ear perceives loudness and is the standard used for occupational and environmental noise regulations in South Africa. C-weighting (dBC) is closer to a flat response and is better suited to assessing peak or impulse noise and low-frequency sound, such as machinery thumps. The 407730, 407732, 407750 and 407790A all offer switchable A/C weighting.
A calibrator lets you verify a meter's accuracy before each session by confirming it reads a known reference tone — usually 94dB at 1kHz — correctly. The 407732-KIT includes a 94dB calibrator. For standalone meters, the calibrator is an optional purchase but is strongly recommended for any regulated measurement programme.
