C-21 VOC Gas Sensor: Solvent Vapour Monitor & Alarm

The Eco Sensors C-21 is a compact volatile organic compound (VOC) gas sensor that detects solvent vapours at low ppm concentrations, before they reach hazardous levels. A heated metal oxide semiconductor (HMOS) sensor drives a green-yellow-red bargraph, an audible alarm and a relay that can switch an external alarm or extraction system. Mount it on a wall as a continuous workplace alarm, or unplug it and use the built-in battery to trace leaks.

What is a VOC gas sensor, and how does the C-21 work?

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are carbon-based chemicals that evaporate readily at room temperature. In the workplace they come mostly from solvents, paints, thinners, inks, adhesives, degreasers, dry-cleaning fluid and fuel. Many have a TLV (threshold limit value) of only tens of ppm, and several are harmful well below the level at which most people can smell them.

The C-21 uses an HMOS (heated metal oxide semiconductor) sensor. The heated metal oxide surface changes its electrical resistance when VOC molecules react with it. The C-21 converts that change into a bargraph reading within a few seconds of the gas reaching the sensor. Air reaches the sensor by diffusion, so there is no pump to service.

Green = normal · Yellow = caution · Red = danger. By default the alarm and relay trigger at the first red bar.

Early warning, not a lab analyser. Eco Sensors describes the C-21 as a semi-quantitative instrument for early warning and leak tracing, not a specific gas analyser. It tells you that the VOC level is rising and roughly how high it is, so you can ventilate, find the source or evacuate. For a compound-specific ppm figure, use a laboratory method or a calibrated specific-gas instrument.

Which VOCs does the C-21 detect?

The C-21 responds to most solvent vapours. The table gives Eco Sensors' typical detection levels (Application Note VO-102) for common workplace VOCs, alongside the 8-hour limits in South Africa's Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents, 2021. The C-21 is a good fit where its alarm level sits at or below the exposure limit, and a poor fit where the limit is far below what the sensor can see.

TLV values are the figures printed in Eco Sensors' application note. Current ACGIH TLVs and South African OELs may differ, so always check the limit that applies to your site. The SA column lists the 8-hour TWA from Annexure 2 of the Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents, 2021 (OEL-ML = maximum limit, OEL-RL = restricted limit).

Not for benzene, formaldehyde, CO, CO2, radon or H2S. The C-21 first alarms at 25–50 ppm benzene and 15–25 ppm formaldehyde, far above their exposure limits, so Eco Sensors does not recommend it for either. Eco Sensors' VOC instruments are not designed for carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or radon and are not recommended for hydrogen sulphide. Hydrocarbon monomers and aldehydes are only detected at tens of ppm, and some are toxic near 1 ppm. Eco Sensors strongly advises testing the C-21 with a sample of the specific fumes you need to detect.

Trichloroethylene in South Africa: Eco Sensors lists the C-21 as suitable, but the SA 8-hour limit (20 ppm) is below the default first-red-bar alarm (50–100 ppm). If trichloroethylene is your main solvent, lower the set point to a yellow bar (see set-up) and confirm the response with a known sample, or ask Ecotao about a more sensitive method.

Where the C-21 is used, and what it does there

Spray booths & paint shops

Thinners such as toluene, MEK and acetone build up quickly when booth extraction fails or filters clog. The C-21 alarms as solvent levels climb, and its relay can trigger a beacon or a fan-control relay, so problems are caught during the shift rather than after it.

Dry cleaners

Eco Sensors calibrates the C-21 so the red zone starts at 50 ppm perchloroethylene. Placed near machines and carbon exhaust filters, it warns of leaking seals and shows when a saturated carbon canister starts passing perc.

Vehicle repair & panel beating

Fuel vapour, brake cleaner and refinishing solvents are common in workshops. On battery, the C-21 can be carried along fuel lines and around vehicles to find the source of a smell.

Printing & packaging

Solvent-based inks and wash-up solutions release VOCs around presses. A wall-mounted C-21 near the press gives operators a visible, continuous indication of air quality.

Woodworking & furniture finishing

Lacquers, stains and contact adhesives give off solvent vapour in finishing rooms. The C-21 shows when ventilation is not keeping up and when vapour is drifting into adjoining work areas.

Chemical stores & production areas

In solvent stores, decanting points and mixing areas the C-21 gives early warning of spills and leaking containers. Chlorinated solvents are heavy, so mount it low in these areas.

Indoor air quality & odour control

Where ozone or air treatment is used to break down VOCs and odours, the C-21 shows whether solvent levels are actually falling. Pair it with an ozone-in-air monitor to check both sides of the process.

Leak tracing

With roughly 2 hours of battery and a response time of a few seconds, the C-21 works as a sniffer. Hold it near pipework, valves, drums and seals, and watch the bargraph rise as you approach the source.

How to choose a VOC detector: is the C-21 the right one?

Answer these four questions before buying any VOC instrument:

  1. Which compound, and what is its exposure limit? If your main solvent's 8-hour limit is at or above the C-21's first-red-bar level (for example toluene, MEK, acetone or perc), the C-21 suits it. If the limit sits between the first-detect and alarm levels (trichloroethylene in SA), lower the set point. If the limit is around 1 ppm or lower (benzene, formaldehyde), you need a more sensitive, compound-specific method.
  2. Do you need a warning or a number? For a clear go / caution / stop signal that anyone on the floor can read, choose the C-21. If you need a ppm figure for an exposure report, you need a quantitative instrument or a laboratory method.
  3. Fixed, portable, or both? The C-21 does both: on the adapter it runs continuously as a fixed alarm, and on battery it becomes a handheld leak tracer.
  4. Does it need to control anything? The relay output can switch an external alarm, a strobe or a fan-control relay, and the data logger output records levels over a shift.

Most sites combine them: periodic exposure measurements for compliance, plus a C-21 running every day to catch the leak, spill or extraction failure that happens between surveys.

Set-up, placement and calibration

Placement

  • Light solvents (acetone, alcohols, MEK, toluene) disperse quickly through a room, so mount the C-21 at breathing height in the work area.
  • Heavy chlorinated solvents (perchloroethylene, methylene chloride, trichloroethylene) sink to the floor and bench tops and cling to fabrics. Mount the sensor low and close to the source.
  • Don't rely on smell. Odour thresholds vary widely between people, and some VOCs are hard to smell at harmful levels.

Alarm set point and relay

From the factory, the alarm and relay trigger at the first red bar. To change this, open the case and set the 8-position DIP switch near the board edge to any of the top 8 bars, from the 3rd green bar up to the 3rd red bar. Only one switch should be on at a time. The relay is rated 30 V, 130 mA AC or DC. To drive an extraction fan or other mains load, Eco Sensors advises placing a power-handling relay between the C-21 contacts and the load. A 12 V DC relay coil can be powered from the C-21's adapter.

Calibration

Let the sensor warm up for at least 15 minutes. Then present a known concentration of the target gas at about 0.1 L/min, using a certified gas mixture, a diluted liquid standard in a glass syringe, or a calibrated reference instrument. Adjust the span potentiometer behind the rear cover until the reading matches a convenient bargraph point, such as the first red bar. Use glass syringes and non-rubber seals, because some solvents cling to plastics and rubber. For a quick daily function check, Eco Sensors notes that a felt-tip marker held about 5 mm from the sensor grille should drive the bargraph to the top.

VOC monitoring and South African regulations

In South Africa, workplace exposure to solvents falls under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 and the Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents, 2021 (GN R280, Government Gazette 44348). The regulations set two kinds of occupational exposure limit:

  • OEL-ML (maximum limit), Annexure 2 Table 2: includes benzene, formaldehyde, dichloromethane and trichloroethylene, several of them flagged as carcinogens.
  • OEL-RL (restricted limit), Annexure 2 Table 3: includes toluene, acetone, MEK, diacetone alcohol and perchloroethylene.

Where a risk assessment shows that employees may be exposed, the regulations require air monitoring, with representative measurements at least every 24 months for agents with an OEL-ML or OEL-RL. That periodic survey shows whether controls worked on the day it was done. A C-21 running continuously shows whether they are working today, and alarms when extraction fails, a drum is left open or a seal starts to leak.

Use the C-21 alongside formal monitoring, not instead of it. It is an early-warning and leak-detection tool. Exposure assessments under the Hazardous Chemical Agents Regulations still need the measurement methods those regulations require.

C-21 VOC gas sensor: frequently asked questions

What is the C-21 VOC gas sensor?

The C-21 is a compact volatile organic compound (VOC) monitor made by Eco Sensors. It uses a heated metal oxide semiconductor (HMOS) sensor to detect solvent vapours such as acetone, toluene, MEK and perchloroethylene at low ppm levels, shows the hazard level on a green-yellow-red bargraph and sounds an alarm at an adjustable set point. It works as a fixed wall-mounted alarm or, on its built-in battery, as a handheld leak tracer.

Which gases can the C-21 detect?

Eco Sensors recommends the C-21 for acetone, diacetone alcohol, methylene chloride, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), perchloroethylene, toluene and trichloroethylene, and for most alcohols and solvents. It responds to benzene and formaldehyde, but Eco Sensors does not recommend it for them, because its first alarm level is above their exposure limits. It is not designed for carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or radon and is not recommended for hydrogen sulphide.

Does the C-21 show an exact ppm reading?

No. The C-21 is a semi-quantitative early-warning instrument, not a specific gas analyser. It shows the VOC level on a green, yellow and red LED bargraph. Full scale is 50 to 100 ppm for most solvent-based VOCs. For perchloroethylene, for example, all green bars light at about 20 ppm, all yellow at 40 ppm and the first red bar at 50 ppm.

Can the C-21 switch on an extraction fan or external alarm?

Yes. The C-21 has a two-circuit solid-state relay rated 30 V, 130 mA AC or DC that switches at the alarm set point. It can drive a beacon, siren or small relay directly. For a larger load such as an extraction fan motor, Eco Sensors advises placing a power-handling relay between the C-21 contacts and the load.

How do I change the alarm set point on the C-21?

The factory default triggers the alarm and relay at the first red bar. To change it, open the case and use the 8-position DIP switch near the board edge to connect the set point to any of the top 8 bars, from the 3rd green bar up to the 3rd red bar. Only one switch should be on at a time.

Can I use the C-21 for dry cleaning perchloroethylene monitoring?

Yes. Eco Sensors calibrates the C-21 for perchloroethylene (perc) so that the bargraph enters the red zone at 50 ppm. Perc is heavy and settles near floors and tabletops, so place the sensor close to the machines and carbon filters. The C-21 can also show when a carbon exhaust filter is saturated and starting to pass perc.

How long does the C-21 battery last and how is it charged?

The built-in NiCad or NiMH battery runs the C-21 for about 2 hours, which is enough to walk a workshop or trace a leak along plumbing. It recharges overnight from the 12 VDC adapter, and the C-21 runs continuously when left connected to the adapter as a fixed monitor.

Does the C-21 replace formal exposure monitoring under South Africa's Hazardous Chemical Agents Regulations?

No. The Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents, 2021 under the Occupational Health and Safety Act require formal air monitoring where workers may be exposed. The C-21 complements that by giving continuous, real-time warning between surveys, catching leaks, spills and ventilation failures as they happen.

How is the C-21 calibrated?

Eco Sensors' procedure presents a known concentration of the target gas to the sensor, from a certified gas mixture, a diluted liquid standard in a glass syringe, or a reference instrument, and adjusts the span potentiometer so the reading matches a bargraph point such as the first red bar. Allow at least 15 minutes of warm-up before calibrating or taking readings.
