What is a laboratory or industrial stopwatch?

A laboratory or industrial stopwatch is a quartz-based timing instrument built to measure elapsed intervals in test, inspection and process work, rather than to keep time of day. It differs from a consumer sports watch in three ways that matter for technical use: a stated timing accuracy expressed as drift per day (typically ±3 to ±5 seconds per day on this range), a displayed resolution of 1/100 second so that short intervals can be read without interpolation, and split and lap memory so that a continuous run can be divided into recorded phases without stopping the count.

The category also covers two adjacent instrument types. A countdown timer counts downward from a preset value and signals at zero, which is what a fixed reaction, curing or incubation period needs. A hygro-thermometer clock holds time, air temperature and relative humidity on one display, so that a laboratory, store room, server room or curing room has a single reference for the environmental conditions a record must be stamped with.

Digital Stopwatch/Clock with Calendar and Alarm

The workhorse of the range and the one most often specified for general laboratory, workshop and site timing. The 365510 counts to 1/100 second and holds a full 24-hour count, so a long soak, settling or curing interval can be run without the display rolling over. Split time and accumulated elapsed time both record from a single continuous run, which is what you want when one test has several phases and stopping the count would lose the total. Two-competitor timing lets a single operator run two parallel tests — two samples, two lines, two boreholes — against one time base rather than trying to synchronise two instruments. The water-resistant housing and supplied 1 m neckstrap suit outdoor and wash-down environments, and the same unit doubles as a bench clock with 12/24 hour display, day and date calendar, and a programmable alarm with hourly chime.

The STW515 is the current backlit stopwatch in the Extech range and the direct successor to the discontinued 365515. It matches the 365510 on timing capacity and on ±3 seconds per day accuracy, so the reason to choose it is visibility rather than performance. The backlight illuminates on a button press and switches off automatically after about five seconds, which is long enough to read a split without draining the cell on a shift-long test. That makes it the right instrument for night shifts, unlit plant rooms, underground workings, early-morning concrete pours and any inspection carried out with a headlamp. Its three stopwatch functions — elapsed timer, split time and two-competitor timer — are presented as discrete selectable modes rather than nested functions, which reduces mis-operation when the instrument is passed between operators or used with gloves. Calendar shows day, month and weekday, and the alarm carries a snooze and settable hourly chime.

HeatWatch™ Stopwatch with Heat Index, Humidity, Temperature and Up/Down Timer

The most capable instrument in the range and the successor to the discontinued 365535 decimal stopwatch. The HW30 combines a 30-lap chronograph, a countdown timer of up to ten hours, and live measurement of air temperature and relative humidity, from which it calculates a heat index — the apparent temperature a person experiences once humidity is taken into account. On a hot Lowveld or Northern Cape site, a dry-bulb reading of 34 °C at 70 %RH feels far hotter than the same temperature at 20 %RH, and it is the combination that drives heat exhaustion risk. The user-adjustable heat index alarm gives a supervisor an objective trigger for rest and rehydration breaks rather than a judgement call. For technical work the value is that one instrument stamps a timed test with the conditions under which it was run: lap recall shows fastest, slowest and average lap, so cycle-time studies on a production line or a materials test carried out over a working day are recorded with the ambient conditions attached.

A compact triple-display clock for any space where the environmental conditions have to be visible at a glance and recorded alongside the time. Time, air temperature and relative humidity appear simultaneously rather than on a cycling display, so a technician reading conditions into a logbook takes one look instead of waiting for a rotation. The maximum and minimum memory with reset is the function that earns its place: leave the unit in a store room, curing tank room, laboratory, wine cellar, server room or reagent store over a weekend and the extremes reached while nobody was present are still on the display on Monday. Temperature covers −10 to 60 °C and humidity 10 to 85 %RH, which spans the range a South African indoor space realistically sees between a Cape winter and a Highveld summer. It is supplied with a tilt stand for bench use and a bracket for wall mounting, and runs on a single AAA cell.

A wall-format clock built to be read across a room rather than from arm's length. The time digits are 109 mm high, which keeps them legible from the far side of a workshop, warehouse aisle, training room, clinic waiting area or production floor — the situations where a bench-sized clock forces people to walk over or guess. Temperature, relative humidity, day and date share the display, so one wall-mounted unit serves as the room's environmental reference as well as its clock, and a programmable alarm with snooze covers shift changes and timed process steps. It measures 0 to 50 °C and 20 to 99 %RH, mounts on a wall bracket or stands on the supplied foot, and runs on three C cells rather than a mains supply, which keeps it working through load shedding.

South African buyers — radio sync does not apply

This model is factory-designed to synchronise with the WWVB time-code broadcast from Colorado in the United States. That signal does not reach southern Africa and there is no equivalent local broadcast, so in South Africa the CTH10A is set manually and runs on its internal quartz timebase. All other functions are unaffected. Leave the automatic daylight saving adjustment disabled, since South Africa uses SAST (UTC+2) year round.

Discontinued Extech models and their replacements

Three models that appear in older Extech catalogues and on many reseller sites are no longer part of the current range. If a specification, tender document or maintenance schedule still calls for one of them, the current equivalent is shown below.

How to choose the right timing instrument

Work through these four questions in order. Each one eliminates part of the range, and by the fourth there is normally a single answer.

1. Is the duration known in advance?

If the interval is fixed — a reagent must stand for exactly fifteen minutes, a sample must cure for four hours — you need a countdown timer that signals at zero, because the operator should not have to watch the display. Only the HW30 provides a countdown, up to ten hours.

If the duration is the quantity you are measuring — how long a tank takes to drain, how long a reaction runs to completion — you need a count-up stopwatch, and any of the 365510, STW515 or HW30 will do it.

2. How long is the longest single run?

This is the specification most often overlooked and it eliminates models outright. The HW30 counts to 9 hours 59 minutes; the 365510 and STW515 count to 23 hours 59 minutes. A test that runs a full working day plus setup will roll the HW30 over and quietly lose the total.

For anything approaching or exceeding ten hours — overnight soak tests, long curing intervals, extended pump or generator runs — specify the 365510 or STW515.

3. Where will it be read?

If the instrument will be used in anything less than good light, the STW515 is the only handheld stopwatch in the range with a backlight, and retrofitting a torch to the job is how splits get missed. Night pours, shaft work, plant rooms, cold rooms and pre-dawn starts all fall here.

If the reading has to be visible from across a room rather than in the hand, the CTH10A with its 109 mm digits is the only model designed for that distance.

4. Do conditions need to be recorded with the time?

Where a result is temperature or humidity dependent — concrete workability, adhesive cure, moisture equilibration, calibration records — capturing conditions on a second instrument invites transcription errors and mismatched timestamps.

The HW30 puts the interval and the conditions on one handheld device. For a fixed location that must be monitored continuously rather than during a test, the 445702 with max/min memory or the wall-mounted CTH10A is the better fit.

Understanding stopwatch accuracy, resolution and real-world error

Specifications in this category are routinely misread, and the misreading leads to over-specifying. Three separate numbers are involved and they describe different things.

Resolution: 1/100 second

Resolution is simply the smallest increment the display can show. A reading of 04:32.17 tells you the instrument resolves to a hundredth of a second. It says nothing about whether that hundredth is correct, and it is not a claim of measurement uncertainty.

Accuracy: ±3 to ±5 seconds per day

This is drift of the quartz timebase over 24 hours of continuous running. Three seconds a day is roughly 35 parts per million. Scaled down, a five-minute interval accumulates well under one hundredth of a second of timebase error — far below the display resolution.

The error that actually dominates

For manually started and stopped measurements, human reaction time is the largest error term, typically 150 to 250 milliseconds per press and worse with gloves, fatigue or a distracted operator. On a short interval this dwarfs instrument error by two orders of magnitude.

The practical consequence: for intervals under about ten seconds, do not trust the second decimal place regardless of which model you buy. Repeat the measurement and average, or use an automatically triggered timing method.

South African conditions and applications

Heat stress on South African sites

Summer conditions in the Lowveld, Limpopo, the Northern Cape and the KwaZulu-Natal coast regularly push apparent temperature well above dry-bulb readings once humidity is included. The HW30's heat index alarm gives a supervisor a defined trigger for rest and rehydration rather than an argument.

Note the limit honestly: heat index is derived from air temperature and humidity in shade. Formal occupational thermal stress assessment uses Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, which also accounts for radiant heat and air movement, so a heat index device will under-represent risk in direct sun or beside a furnace or kiln. Treat the HW30 as a screening and awareness instrument, and specify a WBGT meter where a documented assessment is required.

Timing through load shedding

Scheduled supply interruptions have made two timing tasks routine on South African sites: verifying generator and UPS changeover intervals, and measuring how long a battery bank or inverter actually sustains a load against its rated runtime.

Both are count-up measurements that can run for hours, so the 23-hour capacity of the 365510 or STW515 is the correct specification. Changeover testing frequently happens in a dark plant room during an outage, which is where the STW515's backlight stops being a luxury. All five instruments are battery powered and unaffected by the outage itself.

Concrete, materials and civil testing

Slump tests, initial and final setting times, mixing intervals, curing checks and permeability tests all depend on reliable elapsed-time measurement rather than high-precision timing, which puts them comfortably within the 365510 and STW515.

Because workability and cure rate are both temperature and humidity dependent, and a Highveld winter morning and a coastal summer afternoon are very different curing environments, the HW30 is worth specifying where the conditions at the time of test must be recorded on the same sheet as the timing.

Laboratory and cold chain monitoring

Reagent stores, sample rooms, incubators, wine cellars and vaccine or pharmaceutical fridges all need a visible record of the conditions a stored item has actually experienced, not just the conditions at the moment someone happened to look.

The 445702's max/min memory with reset answers exactly that: reset it at the start of a period and the extremes reached over a weekend, a long weekend or a public holiday are still on the display when staff return. Its −10 to 60 °C range covers ambient rooms and cool stores, though not deep-freeze applications.

Time zone and clock setting

South Africa observes South African Standard Time (SAST), which is UTC+2 throughout the year with no daylight saving transition. On any Extech clock in this range that offers an automatic daylight saving adjustment, that setting should be left off — leaving it enabled will shift the clock by an hour at a Northern Hemisphere transition date that has no local meaning.

The CTH10A's radio time-code receiver is designed for the North American WWVB broadcast and has no usable signal in southern Africa, so it is set manually here. This does not affect the clock's timekeeping in normal use.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Extech 365510 and the Extech STW515?

Both are water-resistant digital stopwatch/clocks with the same 23 hour 59 minute 59.99 second timing capacity and the same ±3 seconds per day accuracy. The difference is the display and the mode structure.

The STW515 adds an automatic backlight that stays on for about five seconds after a button press, which makes it the correct choice for night shifts, plant rooms, underground work and any test carried out in poor light. The 365510 has no backlight and is the lighter, simpler and more economical of the two for daylight or well-lit indoor use. The STW515 also presents its three stopwatch functions — elapsed timer, split time and two-competitor timer — as explicitly selectable modes.

Is the Extech 365515 or 365535 still available?

No. Both have been discontinued by the manufacturer and no longer appear in the current Extech Stopwatches, Timers & Clocks range.

The Extech 365515 backlit stopwatch/clock has been superseded by the Extech STW515, which offers the same timing capacity and accuracy with the same backlit display. The Extech 365535 decimal stopwatch has been superseded by the Extech HW30, which keeps the multi-mode chronograph and countdown timer and adds temperature, humidity and heat index measurement. The Extech PT400 programmable timer has also been withdrawn from the range.

What does ±3 seconds per day accuracy actually mean on a stopwatch?

It describes drift of the quartz timebase over a full day of continuous running, not the error on a single short measurement. Over a 24 hour period the displayed time may differ from true time by up to three seconds, which is roughly 35 parts per million.

On a five minute test the same drift contributes well under one hundredth of a second, so for typical laboratory and site timing the dominant error is human reaction time at start and stop — usually 150 to 250 milliseconds — rather than the instrument itself. This is why a displayed resolution of 1/100 second should not be confused with measurement uncertainty.

Does the Extech CTH10A radio-controlled clock work in South Africa?

The radio synchronisation feature does not work in South Africa. The CTH10A receives a time code broadcast from radio station WWVB in Colorado in the United States, and that low-frequency signal does not reach southern Africa. There is no equivalent public time-code broadcast covering South Africa.

The clock is therefore set manually here and runs on its internal quartz timebase, which is how most wall clocks operate in any case. Every other function is unaffected: the 109 mm digits, temperature and humidity displays, calendar, alarm and snooze all work normally. Note also that South Africa observes SAST (UTC+2) year round with no daylight saving, so the clock's automatic daylight saving adjustment should be left disabled.

Can the Extech HW30 heat index reading be used for occupational heat stress compliance?

It should be treated as a screening and awareness tool rather than a compliance instrument. The HW30 calculates a heat index from dry-bulb air temperature and relative humidity, which describes how hot conditions feel in shade.

Formal occupational thermal stress assessment is normally based on Wet Bulb Globe Temperature, which additionally accounts for radiant heat load from the sun or from hot plant, and for air movement. A heat index device will therefore under-represent risk in direct sun or beside a furnace, kiln or engine.

The HW30 is well suited to giving a supervisor an immediate, defensible trigger for rest breaks and hydration on a hot site, and to logging conditions alongside timed work cycles. A WBGT meter is the correct instrument where a documented thermal stress assessment is required.

Which Extech stopwatch is best for concrete and materials testing?

For slump tests, setting time, mixing intervals and curing checks, the Extech 365510 or STW515 are both appropriate, because these tests need reliable elapsed-time and interval measurement rather than high-precision timing. Choose the STW515 if testing happens in a poorly lit batching plant or after dark.

Choose the HW30 where ambient temperature and humidity also need to be recorded at the time of the test, since curing rate and workability are temperature and humidity dependent and the HW30 captures all three on one instrument instead of requiring a separate hygro-thermometer.

What is the difference between a stopwatch, an interval timer and a countdown timer?

A stopwatch counts upward from zero and measures how long something took, which is what you need when the duration is the unknown quantity — a settling test or a pump fill time, for example.

An interval or split timer counts upward continuously while recording intermediate marks, so a single run can be broken into phases without stopping the clock.

A countdown timer counts downward from a preset value and alerts you when it reaches zero, which is what you need when the duration is fixed in advance, such as a reagent reaction time or a fixed curing interval. The Extech HW30 provides all three, including a countdown of up to ten hours and 30 lap or split memories.

Do Extech stopwatches come with a calibration certificate?

The standard models are supplied without a calibration certificate. Where a timing device forms part of a documented quality system, a traceable certificate is usually obtained separately through a calibration laboratory, and timing accuracy is verified against a traceable time reference over a defined interval.
