A multimeter is a single handheld instrument that combines a voltmeter, an ammeter and an ohmmeter, allowing an electrician or technician to measure voltage, current and resistance — and on modern digital models also capacitance, frequency, duty cycle, temperature, diode drop and continuity — by turning one rotary switch rather than carrying several instruments.

How to choose a multimeter
Selecting a multimeter is largely a matter of matching four specifications to the work you actually do. Getting these right matters more than the total number of functions printed on the box.
- 1. Safety category (CAT rating) — decide this first The CAT rating describes how much transient overvoltage energy the instrument can survive at a given point in an installation. Available fault energy rises the closer you work to the supply transformer, so the rating must match the location, not the voltage alone. Choose CAT III for distribution boards and fixed wiring, and CAT IV for service entrances, metering panels and outdoor conductors. Always read the category and the voltage together — CAT IV-600 V is a more demanding specification than CAT III-1000 V.
- 2. True RMS or average-responding If any part of your work involves variable speed drives, solar inverters, UPS systems, generators, LED drivers or dimmers, you need True RMS. On distorted waveforms an average-responding meter can read substantially low. See the comparison below.
- 3. Resolution (display count) Count sets how finely a reading is resolved, not how accurate it is. 2 000–4 000 counts is ample for general fault finding; 50 000 counts suits calibration checks and low-level signal work where small changes must be visible.
- 4. Environmental protection A meter used in a food plant wash-down bay, a mine, a wastewater works or on a rooftop needs sealing. An IP67 rating means dust-tight and able to withstand temporary immersion — the difference between a meter that lasts years and one replaced annually.
- 5. Then consider the extras Non-contact voltage detection saves carrying a separate pen. A built-in infrared thermometer finds hot joints and overloaded terminations. A low pass filter strips switching noise on drive outputs. LoZ mode eliminates misleading ghost voltages on long parallel cable runs.
True RMS vs average-responding: what actually differs
This is the single most consequential choice on the page, and the one most often got wrong. An average-responding meter measures the rectified average of the AC waveform and multiplies it by a fixed scaling factor of approximately 1.11. That factor is only correct for a pure sine wave. A True RMS meter instead computes the actual heating value of the waveform, which is what determines how much a conductor warms and what a load genuinely experiences — and that computation holds regardless of waveform shape.

Practical rule of thumb
If the load contains a semiconductor — a drive, an inverter, a rectifier, an electronic ballast, an LED driver, a switch-mode power supply — the waveform is no longer a clean sine wave and the meter must be True RMS. Because the great majority of modern commercial and industrial loads now fall into that category, True RMS has shifted from a premium feature to the sensible default for professional work.

The MN36 is the meter to choose when the person using it is not necessarily an electrician. Autoranging places the decimal point and selects maximum resolution automatically, removing the commonest source of misreading. Extech DM220: Mini Pocket MultiMeter with NCV
Pocket-size autoranging meter with built-in non-contact voltage detection
The DM220 is the current replacement for the long-serving DM110 and keeps that meter's defining virtue — it genuinely fits a shirt pocket. The addition of a non-contact voltage detector matters more than it first appears: proving a circuit live and then measuring it becomes a one-instrument operation, which removes a step where a second tool is commonly left behind or mislaid on site.

Extech EX411A: 8 Function True RMS Professional MultiMeter
True RMS version of the EX410A, with the same large-digit display and accessories
Mechanically identical to the EX410A but with True RMS measurement, the EX411A is the version to specify if there is any prospect of the meter meeting a drive output, an inverter or an electronic ballast. Extech EX470A: 12 Function True RMS MultiMeter + Infrared Thermometer

The EX470A exists because electrical faults announce themselves as heat long before they announce themselves as failures. A loose busbar connection, an overloaded termination or a failing contactor runs hot while still reading normal electrically. Being able to sweep a panel with the infrared thermometer and then immediately measure the suspect circuit — with the laser pointer centring the measurement area — makes this the natural single instrument for HVAC commissioning and preventive maintenance rounds. Two Type K remote probes allow differential temperature measurement across a heat exchanger or coil.

Heavy-duty industrial multimeters — EX5xxA series
The EX5xxA series is built for environments that destroy ordinary meters. All three models share a CAT IV-600 V safety rating, an IP67 waterproof and dustproof rating, a double-molded housing and 2 metre drop-proof construction, and all carry a three-year warranty. The EX505A is the entry point to the industrial series and the right choice where the environment, rather than the measurement, is the challenge. The EX520A adds the two features that separate an industrial meter from a merely rugged one. The low pass filter strips high-frequency switching content so that a variable speed drive output can be read as the fundamental the motor actually sees, rather than the carrier. LoZ mode places a low-impedance load across the input that collapses ghost voltages induced on unused conductors in shared conduit — the single most common cause of a technician chasing a fault that does not exist. The 20 A range also doubles the direct current capability over the EX505A.

The EX530A is the instrument to specify when resolution matters as much as ruggedness. A 50 000 count display resolves changes an ordinary 6 000 count meter simply cannot show, which makes it suitable for verifying instrumentation loops, checking calibration in the field and diagnosing slow drift in a signal. It carries the same low pass filter and LoZ functions as the EX520A, adds peak hold, min/max, relative mode and a bar graph, and is equally at home outdoors on a boat or a rooftop as on a bench.

Understanding CAT safety ratings
Measurement category ratings are frequently misread as simply "higher is better for higher voltage". They are not a voltage rating at all — they describe the transient overvoltage energy an instrument can survive at a particular point in an installation. The further upstream you work, the lower the source impedance and the greater the energy available to sustain an arc, so the requirement rises even though the nominal voltage may not.

Read the category and the voltage together
A meter marked CAT III-1000 V and one marked CAT IV-600 V are not ranked by their voltage numbers. The CAT IV instrument is designed to survive a more severe transient environment. If your work reaches the service entrance or outdoor conductors, the category is what matters — which is why the Extech EX5xxA series is rated CAT IV-600 V.
Multimeter selection for South African conditions
South African installations place a particular set of demands on a multimeter, and they have changed noticeably over the past few years.
Backup power has made True RMS effectively mandatory
The widespread adoption of inverters, battery storage and standby generators in South African homes, offices and small industry means a great many circuits now run, at least some of the time, on a synthesised or generator-derived waveform rather than clean utility sine wave. An average-responding meter can read materially low on that supply. Any technician commissioning, fault-finding or verifying a backup installation should be carrying a True RMS instrument — the EX411A, EX430A, EX350 or EX355 for general work, or the EX520A and EX530A where drive outputs and ghost voltages are also in play.
Solar PV work is DC work at serious voltages
Rooftop and ground-mount PV brings DC string voltages that can exceed the AC side of the same installation, combined with permanent outdoor exposure to dust, heat and rain. This is the clearest case for an IP67-rated instrument: the EX505A, EX520A and EX530A are sealed against dust and temporary immersion and survive a 2 metre drop off a roof edge or scaffold. The EX470A is worth considering alongside them where thermal inspection of DC connectors, isolators and combiner box terminations forms part of the same visit — loose DC connections are a well-recognised fire risk and they show up thermally first.
Nominal supply values worth having to hand
South African low-voltage distribution is nominally 230 V single phase and 400 V three phase at 50 Hz. Every meter on this page covers those ranges comfortably. What separates them is not whether they can read 400 V, but the CAT rating appropriate to where in the installation you are standing, and whether the waveform you are measuring is clean enough for an average-responding meter to be trusted.
Agriculture, aquaculture and water treatment
Across the sectors Ecotao supplies most heavily — irrigation, aquaculture recirculation systems, wastewater plants and food processing — meters live around pumps, blowers, dosing systems and wash-down areas. Moisture ingress, not electrical failure, is what typically kills an instrument in these settings. An IP67 rating and double-molded housing pay for themselves quickly, and the 4–20 mA function on the EX530A is directly useful for verifying level, flow and dissolved oxygen transmitter loops without a separate process calibrator.

What is the difference between a True RMS and an average-responding multimeter?
An average-responding multimeter measures the rectified average of an AC waveform and multiplies it by a fixed factor that is only correct for a clean sine wave. A True RMS multimeter calculates the actual heating value of the waveform, so it stays accurate on distorted waveforms. On the chopped waveform produced by a variable speed drive, an inverter, a dimmer or a switch-mode power supply, an average-responding meter can read significantly low. If you work on solar inverters, UPS systems, generators or VSD-fed motors, choose True RMS. The Extech EX411A, EX430A, EX470A, EX350, EX355 and the entire EX5xxA series are True RMS instruments.
What CAT rating do I need for a multimeter in South Africa?
The CAT rating describes how much transient overvoltage energy an instrument can survive at a given point in an installation. CAT II covers plug-connected loads and socket outlets. CAT III covers fixed installation wiring, distribution boards and permanently connected motors. CAT IV covers the origin of the installation, the supply side of the main disconnect, service entrance conductors and outdoor conductors. Work closer to the supply transformer means higher available fault energy, so a higher CAT rating is required. For distribution board work choose at least CAT III; for metering panels, service entrance work and outdoor connections choose CAT IV. The Extech EX5xxA series is rated CAT IV-600 V. Always confirm both the CAT category and the voltage number, since CAT III-1000 V and CAT IV-600 V are different specifications.
Why does my multimeter show a voltage on a wire that should be dead?
This is usually a ghost voltage, also called a phantom voltage. A modern digital multimeter has very high input impedance, so capacitive coupling between an energised conductor and an adjacent unused conductor running in the same conduit or trunking induces a voltage that the meter faithfully displays. The circuit cannot supply meaningful current, so the reading is real but misleading. A LoZ or low-impedance mode places a deliberate low resistance load across the input that dissipates the coupled charge and collapses the ghost reading, while a genuine live circuit continues to read correctly. The Extech EX520A and EX530A include a LoZ function. Always prove dead with an approved method before working on a conductor.
What does display count mean, and how many counts do I need?
Count is the highest number the display can show before it must switch to a coarser range, and it sets the resolution of a reading. A 2 000 count meter reads up to 1999 and resolves 600 V in 1 V steps. A 6 000 count meter resolves the same range more finely, and a 50 000 count meter finer still. Count is resolution, not accuracy, which is quoted separately as a percentage of reading. For general electrical fault finding 2 000 to 4 000 counts is adequate, which covers the Extech EX310 and EX330. For calibration checks, low-level signal work or where small changes matter, the 50 000 count Extech EX530A at ±0.06% basic accuracy is the appropriate choice.
Which Extech multimeter is best for solar PV and inverter installations?
Inverter and battery installations need three things from a multimeter. First, True RMS, because inverter output is a synthesised waveform rather than a clean sine wave. Second, adequate DC capability, because PV strings and battery banks operate at DC voltages that can exceed the AC side. Third, a low pass filter, which strips high frequency switching noise so the meter reads the fundamental rather than the carrier. The Extech EX520A and EX530A provide all three, together with an IP67 rating for outdoor rooftop and ground-mount work. The EX470A is a useful alternative where infrared temperature measurement of connections and busbars matters as much as electrical measurement.
Is the Extech EX410, EX411, DM110, MN16A or DV26 still available?
No. Extech has discontinued all five of these models. The EX410 is replaced by the EX410A, the EX411 by the EX411A, and the DM110 by the DM220. The MN16A is superseded by the MN35 manual-ranging and MN36 autoranging mini multimeters. The DV26 non-contact voltage detector is discontinued and current alternatives sit in the voltage and current tester range. What does an IP67 rating mean on an industrial multimeter?
IP67 is a two-digit ingress protection rating. The first digit, 6, is the highest solid particle rating and means the enclosure is completely dust tight. The second digit, 7, means the enclosure withstands temporary immersion in water to one metre for thirty minutes. For a multimeter this matters in wash-down areas, food processing plants, water and wastewater works, mining, marine and outdoor installations, where a conventional meter would fail from moisture or dust ingress. The Extech EX505A, EX520A and EX530A are all IP67 rated and additionally drop-proof to 2 metres.
