Weather Station

Ecowitt-based farm instrumentation

Which Ecotao weather station also reads your soil?

All three: the HP2551CA, the WS6006CE and the HP2553CA are full agricultural weather stations on their own, and every one of them can be expanded with a wireless WH51 soil moisture probe — so the same 7″ console that shows you wind, rain and pressure can also show you root-zone moisture, without a second system to buy or learn.

Quick answer: choose the HP2551CA if your farm office has Wi-Fi, the WS6006CE if your field or borehole site has no Wi-Fi but has cellular signal, and the HP2553CA if you need a maintenance-free wind sensor and longer range for an exposed, dusty or coastal site. All three accept the same plug-in WH51 soil moisture sensor.

Three ways to monitor your farm's weather

HP2551CA wireless weather station kit with outdoor sensor array and 7-inch console
SKU: HP2551CA

HP2551CA Wireless Weather Station Kit

Best for farms and homesteads with Wi-Fi

A Wi-Fi connected station built around a standard cup-and-vane wind sensor and a compact solar-powered outdoor array. It reports to a 7″ colour TFT console with live graphing, trend alarms and a pressure-based weather forecast, and can push that data straight to the internet.

Wind sensingCup and vane type, 433MHz, up to 100m line of sight
ConnectivityBuilt-in Wi-Fi, uploads to four pre-configured web services and apps
Display7″ colour TFT, real-time graphs, trends and alarms, user calibration with factory reset
LoggingRecords min/max with date and time; 16MB onboard memory, expandable to microSD (not included)
Update rate~16 seconds from the outdoor sensor array
PowerSolar panel and supercapacitor outdoors; 5V/1A DC console, adapter included
Soil add-onAccepts WH51 soil moisture, multi-channel temperature/humidity, air quality, leaf wetness and lightning sensors

Mounting poles for the outdoor sensor and rain gauge are not included – use any 40–50mm diameter pole. A Wi-Fi network with internet access is required for live upload.

WS6006CE remote wireless weather station kit, standalone solar and battery powered
SKU: WS6006CE

WS6006CE Remote Wireless Weather Station Kit

Best for remote fields, boreholes and sites with no Wi-Fi

Where there's no farm Wi-Fi but there is a cellular signal, the WS6006CE runs as a completely standalone unit: solar and battery powered, logging locally and reporting over a 4G SIM rather than a router. It is built to keep working unattended at an outlying field, dam wall or borehole.

Connectivity4G GPRS/SMS with micro and nano SIM slots (data and SMS enabled SIM required, not included)
PowerFully standalone, solar panel with battery backup on the outdoor array
SensingSame 433MHz outdoor sensor array plus a remote indoor humidity/temperature sensor, up to 100m line of sight
LoggingCSV data logging to microSD/TF card (not included); setup and download software included via USB
AlertsUser-configured thresholds with SMS alarms or periodic SMS to up to three phones; mobile control by SMS reply
Soil add-onOptional WH51 soil moisture sensor

Because cellular data is metered, cloud upload intervals are typically longer than on the Wi-Fi models – expect roughly a 10-minute upload cycle on solar power to conserve SIM data. Mounting poles are not included.

HP2553CA wireless weather station kit with ultrasonic anemometer and separate rain gauge
SKU: HP2553CA

HP2553CA Wireless Weather Station Kit with Ultrasonic Anemometer

Best for windy, dusty or coastal sites needing precision

The same 7″ Wi-Fi console as the HP2551CA, paired with a solid-state ultrasonic anemometer instead of spinning cups, plus a separate large-capture rain gauge for finer rainfall resolution. With nothing mechanical to wear out in the wind sensor, it suits exposed vineyards, orchards and coastal blocks.

Wind sensingUltrasonic anemometer, no moving parts, measures wind speed and direction
Rain gaugeSeparate large-area gauge, 0.1mm resolution, for better accuracy than the integrated tipping spoon
ConnectivityBuilt-in Wi-Fi, same four pre-configured web services and apps
Range433MHz, extended to up to 200m line of sight
Update rate~4.8 seconds for wind and weather data, ~48 seconds for rain
Logging & power16MB onboard memory with microSD expansion; solar/supercap outdoor power; 5V/1A DC console
Soil add-onAccepts WH51 soil moisture sensors on the same channel system as the HP2551CA

Mounting poles for the sensor and rain gauge are not included – use any 40–50mm diameter pole. A Wi-Fi network with internet access is required for live upload.

Why this page is called "Soil & Weather"

One console, both readings: weather above the canopy, moisture below the roots

Every console on this page runs on the same 433MHz sensor network used by the optional WH51 wireless soil moisture probe. Push one into the root zone of a block you're irrigating, pair it to the console, and its reading appears on the same screen as your wind, rain and temperature data – up to eight soil probes per console, so you can compare moisture across different blocks or depths at a glance.

If you need lab-style soil chemistry rather than just moisture, Ecotao also stocks dedicated soil instruments that pair well with a weather station programme:

Frequently asked

Questions South African farmers ask before buying

Can these weather stations also monitor soil moisture?

Yes. All three consoles – HP2551CA, WS6006CE and HP2553CA – share the same 433MHz Ecowitt sensor network, so you can add a WH51 wireless soil moisture probe, or several on separate channels, and read live root-zone moisture on the same display alongside your weather data.

What is the real difference between the HP2551CA and the WS6006CE?

The HP2551CA is a Wi-Fi station: it needs a farm office or home network and pushes data to the internet over Wi-Fi. The WS6006CE is built for sites with no Wi-Fi at all. It uses a 4G SIM card to log data and can text weather alerts and readings to up to three phones, running entirely on solar and battery power.

Do I need an internet connection to use these weather stations?

The HP2551CA and HP2553CA need a Wi-Fi network with internet access to push live data online, though the console still works locally without it. The WS6006CE only needs cellular signal and a data and SMS enabled SIM card, with no Wi-Fi or fixed internet line required.

How far can the outdoor sensors transmit?

The cup-and-vane sensor arrays on the HP2551CA and WS6006CE transmit up to 100 metres line of sight. The HP2553CA's ultrasonic anemometer and separate rain gauge extend that to roughly 200 metres line of sight.

Is the ultrasonic anemometer worth the extra cost over a standard cup-and-vane sensor?

The ultrasonic anemometer on the HP2553CA has no spinning cups or vane bearings to wear out, seize with dust, or need re-greasing, and it updates wind readings roughly every 4.8 seconds versus 16 seconds on the standard sensor. It suits dusty, salty or very windy sites, such as coastal or high-altitude farms, where moving parts fail faster.

Are mounting poles included with the kits?

No. Each kit needs its own pole of 40 to 50mm diameter for the outdoor sensor array and rain gauge. Mounting poles are not supplied with any of the three kits.

Are these weather stations legal to use in South Africa?

Yes. The HP2551CA, WS6006CE and HP2553CA carry ICASA type-approval certification for their 433MHz radio sensors, so they are cleared for use on South African farms and properties.

Can I get an alert before frost, wind or a storm damages my crop?

Yes. All three consoles let you set high and low alarm thresholds for temperature, wind, rain and pressure. The WS6006CE can also push those alerts as SMS messages to up to three phones, and the Wi-Fi models can forward alerts through the Ecowitt app once linked to a web server.
